Direct Metal Laser Sintering, or DMLS, creates parts by laser melting metal powder. This additive technology is a metallurgical process producing high quality parts that can be used for design and development through production.

 

DMLS is made possible by sophisticated equipment developed by EOS, an e-manufacturing company. rp+m uses their proprietary equipment: the EOSINT M-280 machine. The M-280 machine fabricates parts by laser sintering a bed of powder metal using a 400 watt laser. The build volume of this machine is 250 x 250 x 325 mm (9.85 x 9.85 x 12.8 in.).

 

DMLS is an on-demand technology that can produce highly complex parts. Since the process works by building one layer at a time, achieving precise levels of complexity is possible. This means that even products with movable parts are possible. These specifications can be built into the CAD file, instead of incurring post-production assembly charges.
